“We are guided by our ancestral values to work together to realize a collective community vision that revitalizes our mother-tongue language - Anishinaabemowin.” ~ Anishinaabeg Kinomaagewgamig
Immersion Coordinator’s Message,
Minodaapnigoom Miiniwaa 2026–2027! (Welcome Again!)
It is an honour and joy to begin another school year together at Anishinaabeg Kinomaagewgamig (AK). Our Immersion School continues to be a place where Anishinaabemowin, land-based learning, and Anishinaabeg ways of knowing are lived every day here in Bkejwanong.
At AK, we hold a shared belief that our children are our future, and that everyone who works in our school carries a responsibility to care for them in that way. Ensuring that all students and staff feel welcome, safe, and a true sense of belonging in their learning and workspaces remains a central priority as we strengthen and grow Anishinaabeg Educational Programming.
Our Immersion School stands as one example of how Indigenous Nations across the land are working hard to address language and culture loss connected to the legacy of Indian Residential Schools in Canada. There is still much work ahead, but we remain optimistic and determined. We will continue developing and delivering an Indigenous educational program that reflects Anishinaabeg ways of knowing and doing, and contributes to Identity Restoration for our learners and community.
As we reflect on the past year, the relationships, the land-based experiences, the classroom learning, and the many moments shared, we will continue identifying best practices and working together to create meaningful, inspirational learning opportunities both on the land and within our school.
Our dedicated staff work hard every day to ensure students are safe, happy, supported, and surrounded by Anishinaabemowin. We are deeply grateful for the involvement of families, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members who walk with us in this work.
Miigwech for placing your trust in us to educate your children. We will continue doing our very best to provide them with an excellent academic education grounded in Anishinaabeg language, identity, and culture.

The Bkejwanong Anishinaabeg Education Eagle Staff is a symbol of arising of the Anishinaabe language among young learners. It is a marker of empowerment of Anishinaabeg identity and reminder of the ancestral legacy that will never be forgotten. The Staff represents Anishinaabeg traditions and reinforces the values of inclusivity and respect for all members of the community, both past & present.
A special acknowledgement to Maashkode-Migizi-Inini (ba) for sharing his language and cultural knowledge at Anishinaabeg Kinomaagewgamig. His guidance and teachings helped our school become more language and culturally enriched and helped with our eagle staff becoming a reality for all our young learners and community.
