About Us

Anishinaabemowin Immersion reflects a collective Bkejwanong community vision that spans more than twenty years. The Bkejwanong ‘Anishinaabe Language Advisory Group (ALAG)’ and cultural knowledge keepers have steadily guided us to where we are today.

Niigaan Waabying (Looking ahead or ‘Vision’)

Miidash wii-maadziimgag enweying (So that our language will live), so our people will once again speak and think in Anishinaabemowin now and into the future as a fundamental basis of our social and working lives.

Wiijinookiiwin (How we will work together)

To create proficient speakers of Anishinaabemowin who are able to meet the challenges of our changing world, we bring in community elders and language speakers who are fluent to assist our teachers with conversational Anishinaabemowin in the classroom.

Anishinaabeg Education program and standards

Anishinaabeg Kinomaagewgamig strives to exceed the minimum Ministry of Education Standards in Anishinaabemowin. Parents are encouraged to utilize additional resources to ensure students receive equivalency of understanding in English, if that is their wish. Our focus is to ensure students are receiving foundational Anishinaabemowin academic and cultural proficiencies in reading, writing, speaking and numeracy to the standard of Ontario Ministry guidelines. In many ways, we aim to surpass Ministry standards for learning, by teaching the children foundational elements of their Anishinaabeg identity, past, present and future.
